TO DO
I was staying in 4 Seasons hotel which faces the river and which is really nice. The building is an old Place and the renovation is well done. It has a good breakfast and correct restaurants (Gresham is good) (one is Asiatic). I have not been thrilled by restaurants in Budapest. Years ago I have been invited as Press and we have been eating foie gras for days. At that time gay disco were famous because women felt safer there!
Nowadays mentalities have changed and straight places are also safe.
The trend of foie gras has faded away and the food is more or less like everywhere: Italian, Asian, Hungarian, world food.. but I would find dificult to recommend strongly any of them . You may however try Café Kor and Fatal (Hungarian food- meat).
We went to a ParK (City Park) and the scenery was so nice (in the north of the City). People were skating on ice and there is a very nice museum (Musée de la Musique) built by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. The name of the area is Varosliget. You will see the Place des Héros. The restaurant there was correct.
I recommend to go for tea time at the famous New York Café (so famous that you have to queue for entrance) May be hire somebody who will queue for you and arrive when that person calls you. A bit tricky but convenient.
Be careful with taxi. Some are not hundred per cent correct.
From there go to District VII quite trendy and full of shops, bars … young people animate that area and its really nice to walk around there. There is a food market which sell many items as well and it’s very charming and lively.
You will certainly experience Hungarians baths. It is really worth taking some hours to go there and learn from Hungarian style of life.
I see also a dance show of dances from the folklore. They were celebrating the famous Revolution of the nineteen century (Municipal Folklore Center).
You might want to see the impressive Grande Synagogue.
You will aldo visit the recent Palais des Arts: Nice round building and interesting collections of Modern art.
Andrassy Avenue inspired by the Champs Elysees is also nice to walk and shop. I did not buy many things from Hungary, may be you will like some scarves…
You wont leave the city without a tour on the Danube. Quite well organsied and interesting. You will learn more of the history while drinking some Hungarian Champagne. I did not pay a visit to the enormous building of the Parliament. You will see it from close in the boat and it was sufficient for me. People say it’ s worth visitiing. I may come back to Budapest to see more. May be in summer time…..
