WIEN
Wien is considered as one if the best European Cities to live in. As a former capital of a vastEmpire Wien is wide and big, with monumental buildings and large avenues. Its apogee dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries and is reflected in the palaces and gardens as well as in the churches and sophisticated institutions like the horse riding Spanish School.
The Center is the best known part of the City and you will understand that when exploringKartener Strasse with all its shops and also Graben Strasse. They will bring you to the OperaHouse (Wiener Staatsoper), the Saint Etienne Cathedral and the Hofburg Palace (where youwill discover the daily life of the Habsbourg family). The mix of medieval, barocco and Belle Epoque styles is amazing.
Some monuments and sites should not be missed. I am thinking of the « Palais du Belvedere »(with its gardens), the Schonbrunn Castle (lot of tourists) and – more surprising- the « Maison des Papillons » (beautiful glasshouse and so many butterflies) (close to Hofburg).
I would also recommend to go to Annagasse and Weihburgasse full of animation and with a large choice of antiques shops. I was there for New Year Eve and the streets were so animatedand full of people enjoyinfg life. I did stay at The Grand Hotel which was confortable and nice with a nice tea room and also as a surprise around midnight a Bomb Alert which broughteverybody in the street with champagne in hand. Everything had been under control and therehad been no useless agitation or disorder.
People in Wien have always been famous for enjoying life and at the time of the Valse the desire of enjoying it was such that there was a doctor in the ball rooms ready to assist thosewomen who were pregnant but wanting to dance till the last moment.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum present a big numer of artwork by famous artists and the Saint Charles Borromée Church is also a jewel to see for its barocco style. I saw a beautifulcollages exhibition at the Museum moderner kunst.
I appreciated the Unkai Japanaese restaurant and I must say I spent a lot of money at a shop selling traditionnals things from Austria in particular lederhose and socks : Loden Planki.
I left Wien by train to go to Budapest Another story!
